Gum and Overall Health Connection

Periodontal disease, which affects almost 75% of the entire world's population, is highly prevalent in our culture. Fortunately, there are many ways that gum disease can be effectively treated. In the last few years, a significant correlation has been found between periodontal disease and other systemic diseases, such as: cardiovascular (heart) disease, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer.

What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

Classified as an "inflammatory" disease, inflammation results from the hard bacterial deposits on teeth (tartar or calculus) that can circulate throughout the body.  Our goal is to reduce and/or eliminate this inflammation leading to a healthier mouth, healthier body and healthier you.

How do we Treat Periodontal Disease?

The key to effective treatment of periodontal disease is early detection. The earliest form of the disease, known as gingivitis, is very treatable. Once periodontal disease progresses into periodontitis, bone loss often results and the treatment needs to be more aggressive. Our team works with you to preserve and protect your gum and oral health with effective treatment strategies.  Schedule your appointment today to learn more.

Scaling and Root Planing

If gum disease is left untreated, a regular dental cleaning simply isn’t going to be enough to eliminate the bacteria.  Periodontal therapy involves cleaning beneath the gum. This deep cleaning is called scaling. We then smooth out root surfaces to make it easier for the gum tissue to reattach and more difficult for the infection to return.  This is called root planing.

Signs and Symptoms

Although red, swollen, and bleeding gums may initially seem like a small irritation, it could signal an infection and inflammation.  Ignoring gum disease can escalate what could be a very treatable issue to one that is far more severe .That’s why it’s important to seek periodontal therapy in Midlothian at Vacca Family Dentistry as soon as possible.
